Entrance Mall

The electricians have finally finished tearing up the entrance mall. Your OTCA executive committee is finalizing plans for improving this area – the new bulletin board is now in place and we will be replacing the OT mail box. The landscaping plan is being reviewed and we will be purchasing and installing new plants and adding mulch. If you would like to assist in this beautification project, please contact Denny or Stuart.

Animal Cruelty

As many of you may be aware, on January 25, a pet cat was shot and subsequently died. It is very disturbing that someone in our community, in our neighborhood, would commit such a cruel act as shooting a pet. Please be aware that there is someone in the neighborhood that will shoot a pet. The Town of Belville has an ordinance regarding the use of firearms which states it shall be unlawful for any person to fire a gun, rifle, pistol or other firearm, including air rifle, gun or pistol or spring gun or pistol or other similar device which impels with force any shot or pellet of any kind, within the town, except in case of self-defense or necessity. If you observe any violation of this ordinance, or have any information about animal cruelty contact the Sheriff’s Dept.

Insurance Savings

The state fire marshal recently announced Leland fire department will get a fire protection rating of 6 starting May 1, a step better than its previous rating of 7, based on the latest inspection of equipment and staff. Insurance rates will go down for Olde Towne property owners as we are within five miles of the fire department’s stations. Contact your insurance agent to make sure they are aware of this improved rating and look for a reduction in your insurance cost.

Sheriff’s Department

Todd Coring of Brunswick County Sheriff’s Dept. attending our February OTCA meeting. He reminded us that 911 is the correct phone number to contact them, even if your issue is not an emergency. He stressed the importance of community involvement in preventing and deterring crime in our neighborhood. He also told us that we will see more patrols in the neighborhood, each officer is required to spend an hour each shift patrolling and talking to residents. He highlighted some new programs: Citizens academy, Project Lifesaver, Citizen Alerts the STOPPED young driver program, and the Volunteer Program.

Citizen Alerts

Citizen Observer is a web based notification tool for law enforcement that enables citizens to receive and respond to text, email, and web alerts. Visit www.citizenobserver.com to sign up for this service.

Project Lifesaver

The Brunswick County Sheriff’s Office offers a free service for county residents who are caring for loved ones with Alzheimer's Disease, autism, or other conditions that make them likely to wander away from caregivers, or to have difficulty communicating with rescuers. Project Lifesaver bracelets can help rescuers find a loved one who has wandered away.

Citizens Academy

The Citizens Academy was established to build a better understanding between Law Enforcement and the community, through a series of classroom presentations and community involvement. Class time features a general overview of current law enforcement issues, patrol procedures, criminal investigations and crime prevention. Classes meet on Thursday evenings. For enrollment information please call Lt. Scoggins at 910-253-2777.

STOPPED Young Drivers

By engaging both parents and teens in safe-driving discussions, STOPPED encourages an open dialogue within families that can help save lives. Parents simply register their vehicle (obtain the form at http://www.brunswicksheriff.com (click on the STOPPED symbol).

A STOPPED sticker is mailed to your home to be placed on the vehicle’s windshield. It serves as a visible reminder to the young driver to drive safely and responsibly, and that should he or she be pulled over for any reason, the parents will receive a letter regarding the incident. The notification feature makes parents aware of any potential problems and enables them to enforce rules they have set regarding teenage driving privileges. Information in the letter includes the time, location, number of passengers, reason for the stop and whether a citation was issued.
