Meet A Neighbor!
Deedi Swart has lived in Olde Towne for twenty-eight years. A native from Kinston, North Carolina she attended UNC Chapel Hill, majoring in Education. After obtaining her Bachelor’s Degree she immediately enrolled at East Carolina to earn three more degrees: a Masters Degree in Learning Disabilities, an Educational Specialist Degree in Curriculum and Instruction, and a Doctorate Degree in Educational Leadership. She taught High School Special Ed in the New Hanover County School system, moved on to become the principal of a middle school in Columbus County and eventually was named to the position of Exceptional Children’s Director.
Deedi met her first husband while they were both students at Chapel Hill. They married in 1978 and, since he was a Leland native, they bought a home in Olde Towne. They have three sons: one lives in Oregon, one in California, and the youngest is a student at East Carolina.
After Deedi divorced, she met Charles Swart in 2002 at a Wilmington Singles Club. Since Charles is originally from Castle Hayne they continued living here in Olde Towne after they married. Charles also had three sons, all who presently reside in Castle Hayne. Deedi’s mother, Dean Jonsey, has lived with Deedi and Charles for eleven years. Additionally their household consists of two lovable rescue dogs.
Presently Deedi teaches two classes for Mt. Olive College, both having to do with exceptional children. She is active in St. John’s Episcopal Church in Wilmington. In her spare time Deedi enjoys reading about history, such subjects as Russia, the Tudors of England, and her favorite the Civil War. She also enjoys Netflix movies, particularly episodes of The Good Wife.
Deedi and Charles are looking forward to going on a cruise to the Bahamas soon. We certainly wish them a bon voyage!
Thank you, CT Shaw.
