Olde Towne Crier July 2009

Mall Improvements

Your OTCA executive committee has hired Roger Lee, an OT resident to maintain and improve the entrance mall on a regular basis. We made this decision due to the complaints made by many of you regarding the appearance of the mall and the lack of volunteers to help in the maintenance. Roger is an experienced landscaper and he will be doing the work for a nominal fee. Once the mall is cleaned up he will be going forward with adding plantings and mulch. Roger has done some excellent work improving landscaping for a number of residents and we are excited to have the benefit of his expertise and enthusiasm for the mall.

Belville Elections

The Town Mayor, Chuck Thurlow and two commissioners (Ennis and McAllister) terms expire in December 2009. Chuck Thurlow is running for re-election as mayor. Jack Batson is also running for Mayor. Buddy Ennis is running for Commissioner. Two Olde Towne residents are running for commissioner: Donna Marie Schardien and Mike Allen. I will be asking the candidates for information regarding their background and positions to be published in next month’s Crier. It is very important that Olde Towne is represented on the Belville Board of Commissioners as our neighborhood is a large percentage of the town population. Decisions made by the commissioners will significantly affect our community and most likely our taxes.

Drainage Issue

The rumor mill in town is working overtime concerning the drainage problems. We have heard of lawsuits being filed against the OTCA (not true), and huge bills being sent to the residents concerned along Albemarle, etc. etc. The town has hired a firm and is paying $7500 to study the drainage problem. I have contacted the Town of Belville and received an update from Tim Byrd. He said he has faxed a map to the DOT that identifies where some of the underground drainage is blocked. DOT has been out to look at the problem and he is waiting to hear back from them as to when they will be able to come out and clean out some of the drains.

Welcome Newcomers

If you have just moved to Olde Towne, Jennifer Ferzola would love to welcome you to our community and help you get settled in. She has a wealth of information about our association and the local area. Jenn’s number is 914-263-3930. Pat Ashburner, chair of our Adult Social committee is planning a ‘welcoming tea’ on September 19th at 11 a.m. – more details to follow in next months Crier.

Dogs

Many of you are pet owners, so we wanted to share this story with you of a wonderful OT resident. Melissa Wilson and her husband returned home about 10 pm on Monday and saw two labs in the street in the rain. One went into the woods. The second came to Melissa and she took it home, gave it a bath and dried it, fed it and fixed it a nice warm bed. Through numerous phone calls the next morning the dog was reunited with his owners who had posted a lost dog sign. It is nice to know we have such wonderful residents in our community. Thanks Melissa for being such a great neighbor.

Dogs wandering loose around the neighborhood is fairly common. They should be on leashes – they want to play and get away and sometimes in bad weather get disoriented and can’t find their way home. Having a collar with a name and phone number certainly would make it easier to get the dog back home. If you have lost or found a pet, The Olde Towne Community Association can help. We can send an email out to everyone that we have an email address. Also, we can put a flyer on our bulletin board letting people know – you will need to prepare the flyer and get it to one of us with a key – Stuart, Denny or Bobbi.

Children’s Parties
We are still in need of a person to organize and plan the children’s parties for the neighborhood. If you are interested in planning the parties (Easter, Halloween and Christmas), please let Stuart know at 371-9555.

Park Vandalism

The OTCA has received a check as reimbursement for the damage done to the park last year by vandals. This is the second time we have received favorable results through the court process. Our thanks go out to the Brunswick County Sheriff’s department for their successful prosecution of this case.
