Olde Towne Crier September 2009
Teddy Hiatt
As I am sure you are all aware, we had a terrible tragedy in our neighborhood. Teddy Hiatt, a 9 year old boy was visiting his grandfather in Olde Towne and fell from a tree while playing with friends. He was in a coma for a week and subsequently died. Our condolences go out to Teddy’s family for their terrible loss. The OTCA has made a donation to the family. Additional donations can be made at any BB&T or RBC Centura bank.
Fall Yard Sale
Carolyn Ferguson and Bobbi Fitzpatrick have again volunteered to co-chair the yard sale that will be held on Saturday, October 10th, 2009, from 7 a.m. until noon. This is a great opportunity to clear out some household things you no longer need and clean out closets of clothes you no longer wear. If you would like to participate, contact Carolyn Ferguson at 371-6648. or Bobbi Fitzpatrick at 371-0836.
The yard sale is a fundraiser for our community; so we hope you will all participate. OTCA will handle all the advertising for this event that generally brings quite a number of shoppers to our neighborhood.
If you would like to sell anything in our community-wide yard sale, you will be expected to pay 10% of what you take in or $25.00, whichever is less. Whichever co-chairman is responsible for your area will be contacting you prior to the sale to provide a payment envelope for you to place your money in. The envelope will be picked up later that day.

Recommended Contractors
This is a personal recommendation, not an endorsement by the OTCA. As always please be sure to check references thoroughly when engaging any contractor.
The following is a recommendation from Andrea Keefe, 735 Brunswick Place.
Two great contractors (also OT residents) who just recently assisted us in the renovation of our kitchen: Dave Hansen- General Contractor, 10244 NOTW 910-443.4501
Dave did a phenomenal job. He has the skill and patience necessary to work on an older house, pays great attention to detail, and was tidy from start to finish. We would recommend Dave for any project large or small.
Dan Mills- Electrician
10267 NOTW 910.443.1553
Dan is a very knowledgeable and skilled electrician. He listened to our needs and was able to make suggestions along the way. We were glad to have Dan be a part of our kitchen renovation project.
You are more than welcome to stop by and see the renovations they have done for us in our kitchen.
Dan Mills also received a recommendation from Angela Hansen.for work he did in their home.
Do you have a basketball goal at your home that you no longer use? We would like to put one in the park. Please contact Stuart Smith if you have one available.
Oyster Roast
Our Oyster roast has been scheduled for November 14th. We will have oysters, shrimp, sausage and lots of other dishes. We will also be holding a short meeting to amend our bylaws, so please plan on attending. Sign up sheets will be included with next month’s Crier.
Welcome Newcomers
If you have just moved to Olde Towne, Jennifer Ferzola would love to welcome you to our community and help you get settled in. She has a wealth of information about our association and the local area. Jenn’s number is 371-6123.
PAID ADVERTIZEMENT
Town Elections
I requested information from each candidate for Board of Commissioners and Mayor for Belville. Elections will be held on November 3, 2009.
Jack Batson - Mayor
As Mayor Pro Tem I’ve observed the town’s excessive spending (77% of budget) on salaries and administration that must be reduced. I halted an initiative to force residents to pay for ditch clean up not on their property, slowed a repressive tree ordinance and made a motion lowering the tax rate. No other commissioners supported the tax reduction. When elected Mayor, I will reduce property taxes and increase services, including fixing the drainage problem. I’ve been active on many town and county boards, a Director for Brunswick Family Assistance, and committee chair to successfully stop Hugo Neu. Vote for Jack Batson for a mayor that will respect citizens. Elect Batson, Schardien and Allen and Belville will have an effective and fiscally responsible board of commissioners.
Buddy Ennis –
Commissioner
I am seeking office because the passion I have for the Town is unsurpassed. Good leadership is the key during this critical time in Belville’s history. To be an effective elected official it is important to build consensus, by bringing the Board and citizens together to solve important issues facing our community, such as the drainage problems in the Olde Towne neighborhood. As the economic situation hits home we must help our citizens during these tough times by maintaining low property taxes. My years of public service in the Town will be an asset to the citizens of Belville.
Donna Schardien –
Commissioner
I have been a resident of Old Town for four years. I am a small business owner and housewife. I am seeking the office of Commissioner for the town of Belville. As a team member with Jack Batson and Mike Allen we will promote fiscal responsibility in the administration of town affairs. The citizens of Belville need a voice in the administration of their town. They need lower taxes and better roads that were promised years ago. We need a reduction in administrative costs. If elected to the Belville town commission, I will be honored to be your voice.
Chuck Thurlow – Mayor
I have been a commissioner for two years and a mayor for two years. David Long and I have been a strong supporter for the development of the downtown area and the movement of Blackwell Road so we can make it a safer intersection. We were also committed to maintaining Belville's small town character, while balancing between aesthetics, growth and the environment. I also believe in supplying quality service while maintaining fiscal responsibility.
When David decided not to run for mayor I wanted to continue his legacy. I feel I have been able to work with the commissioners and community in a way that we can successfully meet these objectives.
Mike Allen –
Commissioner
My name is Mike Allen and I am running for commissioner. As your representative, I will lower taxes and listen to the citizens. I have lived in this community for over thirty years and I have seen a lot of changes in our community. I will make sure your voice is always heard and respected. I have a special interest in reducing speeding on our roadways and ensuring home security. I have a history of public service. After twenty-seven years, I recently retired as a Command Sergeant Major from US Army Reserve. For twenty-eight years. I have served as a Reserve Deputy Sheriff for Brunswick County. I will retire from AT&T Telecommunication this December with over forty years of experience in business and I look forward to putting my experience to work for the Citizens of Belville. Vote for me on November 3.
