OTCA Children’s Parties

The OTCA Children’s Christmas party was a huge success. Many thanks to Christy Kubes for planning and hosting the party. There was a large turn out and everyone had a wonderful time! The next event is the Easter party. If you are interested in helping with any of the OTCA children’s parties, please let Stuart Smith know.

Neighborhood Watch

Sgt. Clint Simpson from the Sheriff’s department attended our last OTCA meeting to discuss recent petty larceny in the area, and to make us aware of the best way to discourage criminal activity. His recommendation was to lock your doors (both your home and vehicles), leave lights on, and make sure your home exterior is well lit. He also advised against opening your door at home if you do not recognize your visitor. If you are planning on being away, let your neighbors know so that they can watch your house for any unusual activity. You can also request a drive by through the Sheriff’s department. He recommended we keep a note of any unusual activity or suspicious persons. If you have any concerns and need to contact the police, dial 911. Dial 911 even if it is not an emergency. Sgt. Simpson also spoke about the Citizen’s Academy which educates citizens about law enforcement and the court system. Classes are held on a regular basis and are very informative. He also made us aware of the new Sherriff’s station at Brunswick Forest, which will open soon and will increase the presence of officers in the area.

Speeding

The Sheriff’s department will be enforcing speed limits within the neighborhood so slow down to avoid getting a ticket!

Commissioner Vacancy

The Town of Belville is accepting applications from town residents who are interested in an appointment to the Belville Board of Commissioners. This open position was created by the election of Mayor Jack Batson. Applications are available at the town website or at town hall.

Recycling Centers

There are four places where recyclable materials can be dropped off. Probably the most convenient location to Olde Towne is in the Brunswick river park. Your recyclables can be dropped off at the dumpster in the park any time the park is open. Materials may be mixed together, Please rinse clean aluminum cans and flatten plastic containers.

Leland Fire/Rescue Corp.

Busby Smith attended the January OTCA meeting to introduce us to the Leland Fire Corps. This is a volunteer organization, which provides resources to the fire/rescue department. They utilize volunteers in non-emergency roles to develop, implement and sustain programs and services that will help the fire/rescue department meet the needs of the community. Current programs include distribution of smoke and CO2 monitors to low-income homes, fire prevention training to schools, and developing a database of special needs citizens in the community. If you would like more information about volunteering, visit them at the North Brunswick Chamber of Commerce Business Showcase on January 30th, at the North Brunswick High School from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Volunteers can assist in many ways to help the community become better prepared for natural disasters, or other emergencies. Volunteers are needed to assist with administrative work, website development, maintaining vehicles, safety education and many other things. Please contact Busby Smith at 399-6724 or email busbysmith@hotmail.com if you have any questions or would like to help out in any way.

Annual BBQ

Spring is just around the corner and the annual meeting and pig Pickin’ has been scheduled for April 24th. Please save the date and plan on attending. We will again have a BBQ pig cooked by Robert Uzzell’s father. Patricia Ashburner has graciously agreed to coordinate the event again this year.

Household Emergency Plan

Imagine as you read this that in the next 15 minutes you will have to evacuate your home. Do you have a plan? Have you held a family meeting to determine procedures to follow in certain disasters? If you have to evacuate your home do you know where you will go? Do your children know how and when to call 911? Do you have a list of emergency numbers near the phone or programmed in your cell phone? Are your important papers kept in a waterproof container? Do you know where they are if you need to find them in a hurry? Do you have two escape routes set up if there is a fire in your home?. Where will you meet outside? Do you have a plan for other family members to find you if you become separated in a disaster. These are just some of the things to think about to become prepared for an emergency. You also should have an emergency kit on hand which contains emergency supplies and information.
